Introducing The Free A-Z Music Production Series Vol. 1 Featuring: Jeris Cole

An idea has been brewing in my mind for some time now to launch a start to finish tutorial series where I would take a song from a scratch track to a finished master all while releasing free tutorials AND the session files for you to be able to have fun with the tracks along the way.

Today, that idea becomes reality.

Some of you may have heard Jeris’ song ‘Chosen’ as featured in my mixing courses ‘Mixing Vocals’ and ‘Mixing Acoustic Pop’. His voice and songwriting skills cause me constant fits of jealousy and I can’t think of a better person to feature in our very first series. You are in for a sweet ride!

How it Works?

To kick things off I have created a poll to find out which of Jeris’ songs you would like to see featured each week as we take you throughout the creation process.

Let your voice be heard by listening to the acoustic demos below and voting for your favorite. Once we have a winner announced (2/13/2015) I will be uploading a scratch track with the guitar/keys and vocal for you to download and work with in any way you choose.

The only rules are that you cannot sell it… I do however encourage you to use your contributions for your resume/portfolio and sharing the song with as many people as you think will enjoy it. Let’s thank Jeris by making his song go viral! ;)

Tutorials and Multitracks

Each week I will be releasing tutorials, articles, interviews and all kinds of fun stuff based around the process of bringing the song to life. From arranging, recording, editing, mixing and yep, even mastering, my team and I are going to document as much of the process as we can stand and share it with you along the way.

Included will be the multitracks as we record them. Once the drums/beats are tracked, I will make those available for download. Once we lay the bass, the same thing. You will gain access to all of the files so you can add to, delete, re-record, whatever you want.

  • Do you play guitar and wish you had access to a great song with A-list musicians holding things down so you could be creative?
  • Maybe you’re a keys player or a beat maker but need a sweet song and/or vocalist to really show what you can do.
  • Mixing or mastering engineer looking to add a great song to your credits?

Whatever your skill or service my hope is that you’ll benefit from using this song to both learn from and to market your services.

        Hey David,
I like what you did with Chosen (talented songwriter!) I’d like to do a mix, I subscribe to your newsletter, but I don’t believe I got access to the multitrack files… Could you shoot me a link or something?
        Great stuff, as always,
        -Mike.

    David,
This is a fantastic idea, and I can’t wait to go thru this process with you! This is what I’ve always needed, in that I have all kinds of hacks and processes, but I’ve never been able to walk from the first step to the mastering process, with a professional guide!
Very grateful for your gracious nature, and willingness to share what you have acquired over many years.

    Respectfully,

    Todd Dickinon

It’s totally my pleasure Todd. This is going to be fun. I can’t wait to get my guitar in my hands again. I’ve been mixing so much that I almost wonder if I’ve forgotten how to play. Lol

I can’t wait to take a walk through the whole process. This is a great idea, thanks for doing this. Its also perfect timing since I’ve got several singer songwriter solo projects done, with only minimal backing tracks. There is so much more to the process, and so much to learn. Thanks again, looking forward to this series to launch. Great work on all your other tutorials. I’ve picked up a lot

I’m liking this idea, good call on moving forward with this & making it happen. Regardless of one’s level of skill development, yrs of experience, understanding or proficiency, there’s always plenty more to learn, so most definitely count me in.

Personally, I’m fine with whichever song is picked for the ‘project’ so my vote for “Where Have You Been” was essentially a mere formality—any one of those songs will be good work thru.

Preciate everything you guys are doing, keep it up.

    Best.

This sounds great! Definitely count me in!
Would love to see what goes into the creative side of arranging and editing the song to full production. Case in point: Chosen is an very nicely written song to start with. Love it as is. Brought even more to life by an equally amazing and well thought out arrangement. Superb!
    Cheers!

David, your idea is brilliant! To be a part of song in mixing, production, mastering and perhaps I can throw in some Mandolin. I really was looking for more creative and challenging stuff and I think you on to something very special. Kudos “Oh Creative One”

What can I say, you are a man of my own heart David. People who share knowledge are golden in my eyes…GOLDEN.

I have been mixing for well lets say 15years now. It started when a band I was in fell apart, but I didn’t want to give up on writing songs having started. I soon learned that mixing was addictive, and boy has this addiction cost me dearly (I love plugins lol).

But self taught only gets you so far so quickly and the music I listen to mix wise is getting bigger, better, clearer and louder. Its hard to keep up with modern mixing techniques and the more I learn the more the goal post moves on me.

David, you just changed all that for me. You dug up the goal post and put it right back at my feet, your techniques are superb. I am working my way through your video and mix and as I mentioned to you, I decided to make the move from Cubase to Pro Tools so that is a learning curve too, but not so bad. DAWs are one and the same you just need to learn the new shortcuts for doing things the concepts are identical.

I am hooked. You have my vote David. This site will be big for you, and you deserve it. Ill say it again, people who share knowledge are golden in my eyes.

    You are golden!
