I wanted to comment on the headphone thing. I use some cheap-o headphones, the Sennheiser HD-203. I bought my first pair of Sennheister back in 2003, back then they were called the HD 212 Pro II’s. The reason I like these headphones is, I’ve been using them (or some iteration of them) since 2003, which means, I know exactly what music should sound like through them. Consequently, I’ll often times throw my headphones on to check levels and bass response. I can’t see me buying more expensive headphones because there’s still a learning curve to all speakers. Having 11 years listening through these very same specs, I know what music should sound like through them.
When I was shopping for monitors, it took me a good long while to find what I liked. I thought monitors were something that had reasonable standards. What I discovered was, monitors are no different than stereo speakers in regards to their sonic reproduction being all over the board. I finally decided on the JBL LSR308’s. I looked at the Yamaha’s and didn’t go with them because they’re so different sonically that I’d have to listen to music for months before I knew what it would sound like to mix on. And Yamaha’s can be dangerous to a mix due to their being so flat that the mids appear heightened. When pulling in a guitar solo, you can make it way too low on all other systems because it seems to sit “right” in the mix on the Yamaha’s. That’s just my $0.02

I’m with you on it taking time to get used to any monitoring switch. My Beyerdynamic DT 770’s (250 ohm) busted on me at the end of a record I was mixing. I couldn’t find any in stock that could make it to me on a weekend so I went with the Sennheiser HD 650’s. At first I was a miserable man… It took quite a bit of listening before I began to come around. I HATED them at first…
